Last fall we brought a group of ranchers/feedyard owners and feed vendors to the table to look at CowboySmart before we entered the final testing/debugging period. What we heard took us back into development with a final punchlist of needed functionality, including closeout reports. We then went back to these same ranchers to test their user experience and help us address any lingering issues. Read on for what we heard.
From Todd Wiebe, rancher/feedyard owner in Burns, Kansas:
Would absolutely recommend it. I was a user of the second generation of the software and transitioned into the new platform for the testing phase. Transition is slow for ranchers. This is extremely easy. And the service from the CowboySmart support team has been excellent, even on weekends. Whatever glitches I’ve had, they’ve fixed. I feed twice a day and that was a new concept for them. There’s nothing they haven’t addressed immediately.
“CowboySmart is very simple. I like having all the functionality even though I’m using it only for feeding right now. I’ll never use invoicing because I don’t custom feed and I’m required to buy all my feed from my nutrition company. But it doesn’t matter. This is very user friendly. I can quickly get to what I want to use.
“I like the fact that CowboySmart archives all my information. I need that. And if I miss a day I can go back and fill in what I did.
“I can keep closeouts for my cattle and now I have past history of closeouts. I can go back a year and determine what my cost of gain was. I can see what cattle performed where and why and adjust feed. It will also help determine purchase price on cattle.
“There are so many facets of this. If you have problems in a pen, you may have consumption problems. With CowboySmart you’ll be able to go back and look at what consumption was a year ago. What did we change? What was different? Why are we not getting the gains or conversions that we had before?”
From Jeff Cleland, rancher/stocker operator in Arma, Kansas:
Testing went smoothly. Everything operates as it should.
“I’ll use CowboySmart for invoicing partnership cattle. This gives me way more than what we need so I can grow into it in the future.
“I can tell you the CowboySmart support team will be a huge asset to users, not just for troubleshooting but for any questions up front. New users should expect great handholding from this team.
“I also believe CowboySmart will be a very good value to vendors who are in the system.”
